ACPD Awards Good Neighbor Award

Two Arkansas City residents were recognized by the Arkansas City Police Department during the April 18, 2023, City Commission meeting for their care and concern toward a citizen of the community. 

ACPD Det. Lt. Jason Legleiter awarded Johnna Haynes and Alice McKee the Good Neighbor Award based on an incident that occurred on Feb. 27, 2023, when Haynes, an Arkansas City Postal Employee, noticed that mail belonging to a resident on her route had not been removed from the mailbox for an extended period.

“She notified her supervisor, Alice McKee, at the post office about concerns for the citizen. McKee immediately notified dispatch and asked for a welfare check to be conducted at this residence,” Legleiter said. “When officers arrived at the residence, they learned that the elderly occupant had fallen and could not move for at least one day. EMS staff was dispatched to the scene, and the patient was transported to the hospital.”

Based on the opinion of the EMS staff on the scene of the incident, if Haynes and McKee had not acted upon their concern, the injured resident would have steadily declined. 

“Johnna’s ability to see something and say something, and Alice taking the step to contact help, very well may have saved this citizen’s life,” Legleiter said.
