Employement Guidelines

Applicants will be eliminated from the employment process if they have falsified, intentionally misrepresented, not been completely truthful, or have not fully disclosed ALL information requested on a questionnaire, document, or application in any part of the pre-employment process.

Applicants for sworn positions must satisfy all requirements as set forth in Kansas Statutes Annotated 74-5605:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States;

  • Must be at least 21 years of age;

  • Must be the holder of a high school diploma or equivalent achievement, e.g., GED;

  • Is of good moral character and free of any physical or mental condition that might adversely affect the applicant’s performance as a police officer.
     

Tattoos, Decorative Intentional Disfigurement, Piercings

An applicant must not have a tattoo, decorative intentional disfigurement (brand), and/or piercing that would be offensive and visible to the public while on duty in uniform or civilian attire.

Applicants with visible tattoos, brands, and/or visible piercings will be approved or denied upon inspection by the Police Chief.

 

Criminal History

  • No convictions, diversions, or expungements — adult or juvenile — of any felony offenses.

  • No convictions — adult or juvenile — of a crime involving an act of dishonesty, including but not limited to theft, fraud, false police reports, etc.

  • No convictions for any sexually motivated crime, whether misdemeanor or felony.

  • No convictions for any misdemeanor crimes involving drugs, weapons, violence, and/or use of physical force or threats in the past five years.

  • Has not been convicted, does not have an expunged conviction, and has not been placed on diversion by any state or federal government for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or its equivalent under the Uniform Code of Military Justice when such misdemeanor crime of domestic violence was committed on or after May 22, 1997.

  • Must not be charged with or under indictment for any criminal activity other than minor traffic violations.

  • Must not have used marijuana and/or hashish in the past 12 months.

  • Must not have chronically used or sold marijuana and/or hashish in the past five years. (Chronic use is defined as more than 12 times total.)

  • Must not have used prescription-level medications not prescribed legally to the candidate by a medical professional in the past two years. Examples include, but are not limited to, ADHD medications, anti-depressants, pain medications, etc.

  • Must not have used, bought, possessed, sold, or assisted in the distribution of illegal or non-prescriptive steroids in the past three years.

  • Must not have used, bought, possessed, sold, or assisted in the distribution of any felony-level drug or controlled substance, e.g., cocaine, heroin, LSD, ecstasy, fentanyl, mushrooms, opium, methamphetamine, etc., in the past ten years.

  • No convictions or involvement in misdemeanor property crimes within the past three years.
     

Military Service

If military service has been rendered, the applicant’s DD214 must reflect a separation code of an honorable discharge or a discharge under honorable conditions.
 

Traffic Violations

Applicants may not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty or no contest to, or been diverted on a serious traffic violation within the past five years.

Serious traffic violations include, but are not limited to, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or both; reckless driving; hit and run; vehicular homicide; and eluding a police officer.

Applicants also may not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty or no contest to, or been diverted on no more than two moving traffic violations within the past year.

 

Past Law Enforcement Experience

If previous law enforcement experience has been rendered, those applicants must not have received discipline for a sustained violation of dishonesty, including but not limited to lying, falsifying reports or documents, illegally obtaining narcotics, or issues of courtroom testimony/credibility.
