On July 11, 2024, at approximately 5:09 p.m., officers from the Arkansas City Police Department responded to a report of shoplifting at Hibbett Sports, 2401 N. Summit St. According to reports, a black male subject was observed leaving the store with merchandise without making any attempt to pay before departing in a Black Chrysler sedan.
Officers later spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated in the 500 block of S. 8th Street. Upon contacting the vehicle's three occupants, officers made a significant discovery — a substantial amount of stolen merchandise from Hibbett Sports was found inside the vehicle.
The suspects were 19-year-old Dawawn McCoy, 20-year-old Day'Maria Shaw, and 20-year-old Ashley Barnes, all from Oklahoma City. Following questioning by officers, Dawawn McCoy was identified as the primary suspect in the theft from Hibbett Sports.
Further investigation revealed that both Day'Maria Shaw and Ashley Barnes had active warrants out of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, for first-degree robbery. Additionally, officers found a large quantity of merchandise from Bath & Body Works while searching for the vehicle, which was confirmed to have been stolen from Ponca City, Oklahoma, earlier that day.
During the vehicle search, officers also discovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The total value of recovered stolen merchandise was estimated to exceed $2,000 from Hibbett Sports and another $2,000 from Bath & Body Works.
All three suspects were subsequently arrested and transported to Cowley County Jail. Day'Maria Shaw faces charges including felony possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and the Oklahoma County Warrant, with a bond set at $54,000.
Ashley Barnes was charged with felony possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without a valid license, and the Oklahoma County Warrant, with a bond set at $54,200.
Dawawn McCoy faces charges of felony theft and felony possession of stolen property, with a bond set at $4,000.
