On December 12, 2024, Arkansas City Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a traffic accident at Radio Lane and Summit Street, where a firearm had been involved.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with witnesses who stated that the driver of the vehicle that had been struck, Teigue Bastion, 22, of Arkansas City, exited his vehicle with a pistol. Bastion was seen waving the firearm around and pointing it at the vehicle that had hit his.
An investigation revealed that an elderly driver, traveling southbound on Summit Street, had struck the side of Bastion's vehicle, which had been stopped at the intersection, before rear-ending another vehicle that was also stopped at the light.
When questioned, Bastion admitted to exiting his vehicle with the gun and that his actions were driven by anger toward the elderly driver.
The elderly driver was cited for causing the accident. Bastion was arrested and taken to the Cowley County Jail, where he was charged with criminal threat, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He has since posted a $4,000 bond.
Additionally, On December 13, 2024, officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving a firearm in the 3400 block of North Summit Street. Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect had already left the scene.
The incident began as a verbal altercation between the suspect, later identified as Jayson Gibson, 49, Coyole, OK., and the victim over a parking spot. Witness accounts revealed that Gibson initially left the scene on foot to run an errand but later returned.
Upon his return, the dispute escalated, and Gibson retrieved a firearm from his vehicle. He pointed the firearm at the victim and subsequently discharged the weapon into the air.
Following the discharge of the firearm, the verbal altercation continued briefly before Gibson entered his vehicle and left the area.
Officers later contacted Gibson, who voluntarily returned to Arkansas City to meet with law enforcement. During the investigation, Gibson cooperated with officers and was taken into custody without incident. His firearm was also collected as evidence.
Gibson was transported to the Cowley County Jail, where he was booked on the following charges:
Gibson is being held in lieu of a $23,000 bond.
A court of law will determine the guilt or innocence of the suspects involved.
